Annie Morris

Indigo Stack, 2018

Foam core, concrete, plaster, sand, steel & Indigo pigment

Through this sculpture, Annie draws on her vast and varied approaches and mediums—both past and present—to explore themes of life, love, loss and memory.

Her stack sculptures, composed of vividly carved coloured spheres of pigment (often described as “stacks of joy”), carry a deeply personal narrative. These works were born from the pain of losing a baby. Stricken with grief, Morris found solace in her studio, initially creating these round, egg-like forms through drawings before translating them into plaster and pigment. For her, the phallic totem becomes a distinctly feminine—and celebratory—form. These sculptures appear to defy gravity, reaching skyward with a majestic presence, their abstract combinations of uniquely placed shapes and fragile surfaces conveying both delicacy and strength.

For the Indigo Art Museum, Morris has created a 280 cm sculpture in monochromatic hues of blue. Rather than working with a single shade, she sought to dissect the colour indigo, constructing a sculpture that is harmonious in both form and tone. In this deconstruction, the piece poses the question: “What is indigo?”
