Born in 1974 in Bad Homburg, West Germany, Gregor
Hildebrandt is known for using pre-recorded cassette tapes in his paintings and installations. He applies tapes directly onto canvases, photographic prints, and room-sized installations. While his work references Minimalism, it intentionally incorporates personal and autobiographical elements, rejecting pure formalism.
Hildebrandt’s practice is rooted in his use of cassette tapes as both an artistic and storage medium, adding an “invisible” dimension to his work. His art engages perception, completing itself in the viewer’s mind. Drawing from music, film, literature, and art history, his works become layered montages of pictorial associations.
Based in Berlin, he embraces everyday materials without aesthetic or theoretical constraints, playfully merging conceptual and minimal art with his personal experiences and pop culture. His work blurs boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the interplay between material, memory, and meaning.
