Indigo pigment on gessoed panelsThrough this artwork, Tanya Goel explores the passage of time, material memory and the balance between natural and constructed systems. She employs the archaic technique of a snap line with pigment—in this case, indigo powder. By coating a string with the pigment and stretching it across gessoed panels, the act of snapping the taut string imprints its register of pigment onto the surface. In essence, the final artwork is the residue of this performance, which requires a team of four to carry out in symphony.
The parallel horizontal lines are built up gradually, creating an ebb and flow of colour density from bottom to top. Disrupting this field, a meandering organic line snakes from left to right across the panels. This line charts the rise and fall of global sea levels, interrupting the static field of horizontals.
